TENSES

 

PRESENT

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

S + V1 + O + Adverb   /   S + to be I + Adj / Adverb

Ex           : She goes to school everyday

She walks to school everyday

I am happy now

You are happy now

” We use the present simple to talk about things in general and we use it to say that some thing happens all the time or repeatedly, or that something is true in general”

 

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + to be I + V-ing + O + Adverb

Ex           : I am Studying English now

You are eating meetball

She is playing basketball

” We use present continuous for some thing that is happening at or around the time of speaking”

 

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

S + have/ has + V3 + O / Adverb

Ex           : I have lived in Bandung for ten years.

She has lived in Surabaya for five years

” We often use the present perfect to give  new information or to announce a recent happening and the result can still be felt”.

 

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + have/ has + been + V-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : I have been living in Bandung for ten years.

She has been waiting for you since twelve o’clock

” We use the present perfect continuous tenses to indicate the duration of an activity that began in the past and continues to the present. it is used with time words as for, since, all morning, all day, all week.


PAST.

 

SIMPLE PAST TENSE

S + V2 + O / Adverb   /   S + to be 2 + adj / Adverb

Ex           : I went to Bandung Yesterday

My Mother cooked leuca last week

I was happy yesterday

You were sad last month

” The simple past indicates that an activity or situation began and ended at a particular time in the past”

 

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + to be 2 + v-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : I was studying English yesterday

you Were watching television when the phone rang.

” We use the past continuous tense to say that somebody was in the middle of doing something at a certain time in the past. the action or situation had already started before this time but had not finished”

 

PAST PERFECT TENSE

S + had + V 3 + O / Adverb

Ex           : He had caught the mouse

” The past perfect expresses an activity that was completed before another activity or time in the past”

 

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + had + been + V-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : He had been living in rancaekek for five years.

“We use the past perfect continuous tense to say that something had been happening for a period of time before something else happened”

 

FUTURE

 

SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

S + will / shall + V 1 + O / Adverb

Ex           : She will go to Australia tomorrow

” The simple future is used to express future time”

 

FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + will + be + V-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : She will be going to Australia

” It means that she will be in the middle of going to Australia”

 

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

S + will + V 3 + O/ adverb

Ex           : She will have gone to Australia at the end of this month.

” We use the future perfect tense to say that something will already be completed.

 

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + will + have + been + v-ing + O / adverb

Ex           : She will have been going to Australia

” The Future Perfect continuous emphasizes the duration of an activity that will be in progress before another timeor event in the future”.

 

PAST FUTURE

 

PAST FUTURE TENSE

S + would + V 1 + O / Adverb

Ex           : She would go to Australia

” The past future is used to exspress past future time”

 

PAST FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + Would + Be + V-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : She Would be going to Australia

” It means that she would be in the middle of going to Australia”

 

PAST FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

S + Would + have + V 3 + O / Adverb

Ex           : She mould have gone to Australia

” We use the past future perfect tense to say that something would already be completed in the past”.

 

PAST FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

S + Would + have + been + V-ing + O / Adverb

Ex           : She would have been going  to Australia

” The past future perfect continuous emphasizes the duration of an activity taht would be in progress before another time or event in the past”
